This letter must be from the middle of August, my best guess some time before 20th - so that it's likely that David's eventual call to go up to Scotland came around 21st August. Mess 4.GG “Anson” RNB Chatham Kent Dear Mother, Well, I’m still in this lousy dump. What a dump, boy ‘Nelson’ is still around here in short pants. It looks as if I’ll be home next weekend on Friday if all runs OK.I’m sorry not ringing you before 7pm on Friday, but as I was on duty ‘in the beer bar’ I could not make it. After I left you I got a chewing up for being late on my PD station, but you can trust me, I wangled out of it. Did Ann leave her phone number on Friday? You must let me know what she had to say. If I come home next Friday you will be out I think, well if you are I’ll be going down to the ‘School of Dancing’ to spend the evening. I had to sleep at the WMCH at ‘London Bridge’ Thursday as I missed my train. It’s not so bad there as the snack bar is open all night. Your sandwiches came in handy. It’s been raining down here all weekend and what with being duty Friday, Saturday and Sunday, you can understand how I feel. I’ve last watch tonight so it’s not so bad. We had a impromtu concert (I think you spell it that way) tonight. I sang a song or two and they went over alright. The boy’s seem to like London songs. I hope ‘ding dong’s back is alright. Tell her that I tried to make it to see her Thursday night but as David did not get home till late she will understand. I’ve a good job since I’ve come back off leave, ‘Commanders goon’. No work to do and if any comes up I’m just not around. Ok eh. Well love to one and all. P.S. If I have to leave here before Friday I’ll drop a line the night before I leave.
4 They will be making us stand around the streets of Chatham with smocks on, a straw in our mouths and saying ‘Oi, liver er’ or ‘It be a foin day it be’. Well, I’ll be saying cheerio for now. All my love to you and ‘ding dong’ from your ‘bony bairn’ David |
